If you thought that any three lines of poetry make haiku, think again. This little gem, the shortest poetical form also has the most rules. Just putting together a sentence in three lines, which is so often the case, is not haiku. It may not even be good poetry.

All poetry is short form but haiku is even more minimalist than most. Traditionally Haiku had 17 syllables. Today anything under that number is fine. English language haiku often runs shorter. 11 to 12 syllables is common. Most modern haiku does not count syllables as long as they are under 17.

So how do you write a poem in so few words ?  There are methods, the ‘rules’ of haiku, to help you create the shortest poem. The rules are really suggestions evolved over years, telling you what to put in and mostly what to cut out. Like packing a suitcase…
