‘Legen Bumbung’ Haiku : The Asahi Shimbun, Today

I love drinking ‘legen’ (Javanese) or ‘air nira’ (Indonesianese), ‘palm water’,  the sap of palmyra palm (Borassus flabellifer), especially in javanese traditional style: served in a bamboo tubes that sealed with the shredded coconut leaves. The sap is extracted and collected by a tapper by cutting the flower of the palm tree. A container (e.g. bamboo tube) is fastened to the flower stump to collect the sap. The liquid that initially collects naturally sweet and non-alcoholic before it is fermented.
